Why Early Intervention Matters
The Infants and Toddlers with Disabilities Program (Part C) of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was created in 1986 to improve the development of infants and toddlers with a disability or developmental delay.
There is an increased recognition that a child’s first years of life are very important. These years are considered a sensitive period in the process of development; in all areas of development. Intervention is likely to be more effective when it is provided early in life.
Neural circuits, which create the foundation for learning, behavior and health, are most flexible (willing to learn) during the first three years of life. The brain is strengthened by positive early experiences, especially stable relationships with caring and responsive adults, in a safe and supportive environment.
High quality early intervention services such as beginnings Infant Program can change a child’s developmental trajectory and provide ongoing benefits for children, families, and communities.
